Extend, 2015. Plaster, burlap, twine, hot glue, chicken wire, mold of my hand.
Washers/Finds/Maintenance, 2015. Wood, glue, gesso, laundry basket, thread, string, found objects lost/left inside of washing machines/dryers at various housing communities (e.g. chewed gum in wrappers, bobby pins, clothing tags, a bandaid, underwear, napkin, OCMA admission sticker, tangled hair, bits of wood and rubber, socks, a zipper, an empty sugar packet).
This sculpture focuses on the maintenance of public washing machines/dryers and the journey of the objects lost inside them. Collected over the course of several weeks, found objects previously lost in various wash cycles regain a sense of belonging as they now coexist, cradled in the central tumbler of an abstracted washing machine form. The process of the material collection for the piece highlights the essential labor of the staff in charge of keeping public facilities clean on a regular basis by shifting that work to the hands of the artist.
Exhibited at UCI's 14th Annual Juried Undergraduate Exhibition, April, 2018
Pages, 2015. Interactive sculpture. Metal sheets, metal spiral binding from a college-ruled notebook, sharpies, pencil, string, tape. Created with help from UCI's student body.
Participants were welcome to write/draw any shareable thoughts onto metal sheets with the provided sharpies. Pages were strewn throughout the various schools on UCI's campus and collected after a period of one week to create a cohesive notebook. Each page has hand-drawn college ruling to mimic the appearance of standard college-ruled paper.
